The Royal Tombs of Ur

My wife and I went to the St. Louis Art Museum this afternoon to view an apparently kick ass exhibit of art from...well, Ur I guess. Wherever that is.

From the museum's webpage:

Treasures from the Royal Tombs of Ur brings to the Saint Louis Art Museum the discoveries of one of the greatest archaeological finds of all time. This exhibition of rare Sumerian works of art dating back nearly five thousand years includes intricate and breathtakingly beautiful jewelry, mosaics and ceremonial objects.

Which really sounds cool. Except we made the mistake of showing up on a Friday. When the exhibits are free to the public. Oh, and near a major holiday weekend to boot. Not too smart, as the wait for entrance to just this exhibit was over an hour.

Instead of shuffling along with the other folks waiting to see the exhibit, we decided instead to meander about the apparently endless other exhibit rooms in the museum. There are some really interesting oil paintings on display right now that were particularly interesting to Marlo, as she is taking up painting as a hobby. Personally, I'm not sure how the hell those folks get the level of detail they do with brushes and oil. You artist types still astound me.

At any rate, we're still hoping to hit the exhibit before it leaves town in a couple of weeks, but next time I think we'll either show up when the doors open or show up on a day when entrance isn't free and just pay the $6 per person for entrance.

We still managed to take a couple of pictures before we left from outside the main entrance to the museum. I need to work on my night photography for sure, but a couple of pics came out alright.

A few stragglers

I've been meaning to post a few more vacation photos that struck me. Last weekend I finally got around to trying out printing out some prints (both 4x6 and 8x11) and poster print (20x30) from Walgreens. I'd like to frame some of the pictures I took during our vacation and hang them, and possibly give some out as gifts, so I finally got my act together and went through the pics again in preparation. So, enjoy just a few more pics here.
